Dad and Mom, Early On

There is something seriously wrong with me...I have been in tears looking at these photos. I love these two. I hope they always know that my life wouldn't be the same without their love.

Mom's senior year Prom, 1965. Mom is wearing a beautiful pink satin dress handmade by herself.

These next 2 pictures are dance dates during the time they were dating.

Mom and Dad are engaged in this picture. Mom's wearing her seminary graduation outfit.

Mom, Dad, and Ken. This is in Laura and Bob Olsen's basement in Orem, where they lived when they were first married. Days after Ken was born Mom got a Uterine infection and had to go back to the hospital for a week. Grandma Cordner and Rhea took care of Ken until she was home and feeling better.

How They Met

Dad and Mom knew about each other for a while before they dated. In fact Dad was in a Book of Mormon study group held every Sunday with Aunt Sharon and about 20 others. He went to dances and danced with both Sharon and Colleen. Dad got called to the Elders Quorum with Grandpa Jacklin and became friends. He would sometimes watch Mom walk to school with her best friend Susan Park. She would walk from 400 S. State street in Orem to 553 E. to the high school. Mom also picked cherries for Dad's family when he was on his mission. She thought he was obnoxious and a show off.

When
Dad came home from his mission he taught a Sunday school class in church that Mom happened to be in along with her best friend, Susan Park. She was only 16 years old at the time and Dad was 23. Dad lived with Rhea alone in his parent's house in Orem, Utah(the house he grew up in) while his parents lived in Wallsburg, Utah.

It was in Nov.1963 when Mom was a Junior in High school that they started to date. It was the day that JF Kennedy was assassinated. Dad had a class activity planned with board games, volleyball. He almost canceled the activity because of the incident but decided to have it anyway. Mom secretly liked him at the time and decided she would be bold and volunteer to go with Dad to get some root beer and ice cream for root beer floats. This very night was the beginning of their relationship together. From then on they dated continuously. Their dates were very different. Most were spent up at the farm in Wallsburg hauling rocks, planting potatoes, or hauling hay. For Junior Prom, which they spent together, they went to Bill and Iva's Cafe which used to be in Orem on State.

While they were dating Dad was gone for 2 weeks with the National Guard in Barstel, California. When he came home he gave Mom a bracelet and a little stuffed dog. She lost the bracelet in the driveway of Dad's house in Orem and years later found it broken in half. This bracelet has been handed down to Becky.

They dated for 2 whole years while Mom finished and graduated from Orem High School. When she was 18 she went to girls camp and was a camp leader there. When Dad came and picked her up from camp she was wearing this around her neck...
A couple weeks later Dad took her to the Salt Lake Temple to walk around. Mom had been teasing him all night that he didn't have a ring for her yet. They were standing on the south side of the temple talking and holding hands when Dad asked her to marry him and he put a ring on her finger. They were engaged to be married on June 19, 1965.
